My name is Amelia, and I am the VP of Recruitment for Sigma Delta Tau! We have a lot of exciting things in store for this semester. If you have any questions or are interested in recruitment, please feel free to contact me. We can't wait to meet you all!
Q&A with the sisters of SDT
Our sisters answer some questions that you may have about what it is like to be in a sorority, the recruitment process, and much more!
What makes your organization stand out from others?
What is recruitment like?
I had the best time during my recruitment process. You get to learn about what the organization works to achieve and about some of the many sisters who are involved. You create friendships that you can hold until you graduate.
- Mackenzie Shuey
Are sisters involved in other clubs/ organizations besides the sorority?
Sisters are well-rounded members of our community! We have sisters who are active sisters in many different organizations and clubs across our campus. We encourage our sisters to join anything that interests them & attend events to support those who are a part of other clubs and support the Stony Brook community as a whole!
- Samantha Boos
Do you still have time for school/other friends/family after joining?
Commitment to any organization requires a dedication of time. This worried me prior to joining Sigma Delta Tau, as school, family and friends are my main focuses in life. After joining SDT, I was able to sustain my GPA from the semesters prior, maintain my relationships with family and friends, and continue to make more. Though living at school has been a new experience for me, joining SDT and having a family away from home is worth every second of time I dedicate to our organization.
- Kaia Terpack
Do you have any tips for recruitment?
Here are some main tips our sisters came up with to help you through the recruitment process!
-Be yourself!! Don't try to be anybody else because you will find where you belong by just being you!
-Don't be scared to ask questions! We are here to answer anything and everything you may be questioning or concerned about.
-Keep an open mind
-Talk to other girls who are going through recruitment. Whether you end up in the same organization or not, recruitment is a great time to meet new people
-Don't be nervous, we've all been through it! There are a lot of emotions with recruitment (excitement, nerves, etc.) but it is all about enjoying yourself, meeting new people, and finding your home!
-When speaking to sisters, tell us about yourself! We want to get to know you, your hobbies, your interests, funny stories, etc!
What if I'm unsure about joining?
Some girls immediately know they want to join a sorority and that's great! But there are always girls who aren't sure, or think its not for them. I was in the same boat, I thought sororities were cheesy, and I was really not very interested. I met a few sisters around campus and started to see that "sorority" and "greek life" terms aside, It was as simple as I wanted to be friends with these genuine, funny, individual girls. My advise to anyone unsure or considering is come meet us and learn more, worst case you decide its not for you, best case is you join something that will fill your college experience with forever besties, and expose you to philanthropic, academic, and professional opportunities to involve you in the Stony Brook university community!
-Uliana Sharapova
What are some professional/educational perks of joining?
Joining Sigma Delta Tau gave me the opportunity to meet many people with the same future goals. Not only do I have a network of sisters who have similar career goals with whom I can study with, but I also have a large array of alum who currently work in my intended field and are always available for advice and help if needed! Another perk that Sigma Delta Tau has given me as a whole is the national SDT Network where active sisters and alum of Sigma Delta Tau from across the nation can interact on a professional level. This not only built up my LinkedIn profile, but also opened many opportunities!
- Valentina Cracolici
Is there community service? What do you do for your philanthropy?
"There's a ton of community service opportunities! We have our own events, like selling nail polish to raise money for JWI (one of our philanthropic organizations). We also attend public events like the breast cancer walk at Jones Beach. We are always getting involved with on and off campus fundraising efforts. A lot of our sisters bring their ideas to the table about different fundraisers and event ideas or opportunities, and with their hard work we try to make it all happen! Our sisters are involved in many other clubs and organizations on campus which hold community service events that our sisters get involved in together. SDT is the perfect place to come help out the community while making lifelong friendships!"
-Gianna DiBenedetto
Is it hard to be in a sorority as a commuter?
No because a lot of sisters are commuters and we are given advance notice about all of our events so it’s easy to plan my schedule to align with our events:)
